WHY IN-HOUSE FEED PRODUCTION IS BECOMING A STRATEGIC ADVANTAGE FOR AGRIBUSINESSES

  • by

A few years ago, having an in-house feed mill was a major investment that many agricultural enterprises could afford to postpone. Today, the situation is changing. Rising raw material costs, unstable logistics, fluctuations in finished feed prices, and the need to control the cost of livestock production are encouraging agribusinesses to seek more manageable production models.

In-house feed production is gradually becoming not merely a supporting facility, but an important element of a company’s strategic infrastructure. Its advantage lies in controlling one of the key stages of the production chain — from raw materials to finished feed, which directly affects animal productivity and the overall economics of the farm.

This model is particularly effective for enterprises that combine crop production and livestock farming. Instead of leaving the farm as a raw material, in-house grain can be processed and returned to the production cycle as finished feed. This creates a closed production chain, with added value generated directly within the enterprise.

This makes it possible to control raw material quality, optimize its use, adjust formulations quickly, and adapt feed to the specific needs of the production process. Feed is transformed from a purchased input into a controllable production resource.

Quality plays an important role. Feed directly affects feed conversion, weight gain, and livestock productivity. In-house production allows the company to control the formulation, dosing, mixing, and consistency of the finished product.

A modern feed mill is an automated technological complex where dosing accuracy, conditioning, mixing, and pelleting determine the final result. Automation reduces the impact of human error, ensures recipe repeatability, and enables control of key production parameters.

Therefore, investment in a feed mill should be viewed not as the purchase of individual equipment, but as part of a long-term agribusiness development strategy. The project should take into account production volumes, available raw materials, product types, the needs of the livestock complex, and opportunities for future expansion.

Experience from such projects in Ukraine demonstrates that combining the engineering expertise of companies such as Design & Construction Company CHIEF with modern technologies from European equipment manufacturers such as Van Aarsen makes it possible to create efficient and technologically well-designed production facilities.

In-house feed production is no longer simply a way to produce feed. It is a tool for controlling costs, quality, resources, and productivity. That is why, for Ukrainian agribusiness, a modern feed mill is gradually transforming from an expense into a strategic asset capable of providing a competitive advantage for years to come.
