MODERNIZATION OF FEED PRODUCTION: WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO INVEST IN NEW TECHNOLOGIES?

A few years ago, modernization of feed production was considered a long-term prospect for many agricultural enterprises. If the equipment was still operational, the production line met its targets, and the feed complied with established requirements, investments could be postponed. Today, this approach is increasingly proving to be too costly.

The cost of raw materials, energy, logistics, and equipment maintenance directly affects the cost of every tonne of feed produced. Therefore, even minor technological losses, downtime, or excessive electricity consumption can amount to significant costs over the course of a year.

This is particularly evident in production facilities where the equipment is still physically capable of operating but no longer meets modern technological capabilities. Older pellet mills and raw material preparation systems may require more energy, more frequent maintenance, and significant manual intervention. At the same time, instability in temperature, moisture, or conditioning parameters directly affects the quality of the finished pellets. That is why modernization should not be viewed as simply replacing an individual machine, but as a way to improve the efficiency of the entire production process.

The pelleting process is a good example. The result depends not only on the pellet mill itself, but also on how well the feed mixture has been prepared. Modern conditioning systems make it possible to control processing parameters more precisely, creating stable conditions for subsequent pelleting.

Such solutions are used, in particular, in the technologies developed by the Dutch company Van Aarsen. For Ukrainian agribusinesses, it is important that modern equipment can be integrated not only into new plants but also into the modernization of existing production facilities.

If an enterprise is spending increasingly more on repairs but cannot increase productivity or stabilize product quality, technological upgrading becomes an investment rather than an expense. At the same time, modernization does not necessarily mean building a new feed mill. In many cases, it is sufficient to identify the most problematic production area and gradually upgrade the critical components.

Today, the competitiveness of feed production is determined not only by capacity. Stability, energy efficiency, automation, and the ability to control every stage of the technological process are becoming decisive factors.

Therefore, the question for agribusiness is no longer whether modernization is needed. The real question is: how much is the enterprise losing every year by postponing it?
