CONSTRUCTION OF A FEED MILL: FROM DESIGN TO COMMISSIONING

  • by
The modern agro-industrial sector of Ukraine is rapidly transforming its development model, shifting from a raw-material-based approach to deep processing. One of the key elements of this transformation is feed mills, which today determine the efficiency of the entire livestock value chain — from farm to final product. Whereas they were previously perceived as auxiliary infrastructure, by 2026 they have become full-fledged production centers on which the profitability of agribusiness depends.

The construction of a feed mill does not begin with equipment or building works, but with the development of the concept and economic model of the future enterprise. At this stage, it is determined whether the plant will operate solely for the internal needs of the business or become a commercial feed producer for the external market. All further decisions depend on this — from capacity to the technological complexity of production. It is precisely mistakes at the initial stage that most often lead to situations where even technically advanced enterprises fail to achieve the expected efficiency.

The next stage is engineering design, which forms the foundation of the entire future system. A feed mill is a complex technological complex where every process must be precisely synchronized: raw material intake, cleaning, grinding, dosing, mixing, pelleting, and packaging. The correctness of design solutions determines not only productivity, but also the stability of the final product quality, as well as the level of energy consumption.

In today’s market conditions, engineering companies that operate in a comprehensive project delivery format are playing an increasingly important role. One such company is Design & Construction Company CHIEF, which acts as an integrator of solutions in the field of agricultural infrastructure. Its approach is based on treating a feed mill as a unified system, where technology, construction, and business logic are combined into a single process. This makes it possible to avoid gaps between project stages and ensure predictable results.

An important feature of DCC CHIEF’s work is its comprehensive approach to cooperation with the client. The company participates in shaping the project concept, feasibility studies, engineering design, construction, and further modernization of infrastructure. This model of interaction makes it possible to create solutions that fully align with the client’s business goals while taking into account long-term development prospects.

The construction stage is the most resource-intensive and, at the same time, critical for project implementation. In modern practice, it is important not only to build the facility, but also to ensure its technological compliance with the design parameters. DCC CHIEF coordinates the work of all project participants, controls the quality of equipment installation, and ensures adherence to technological standards. This approach minimizes risks and ensures a stable production launch.

Automation plays a distinct role in modern feed mills. Production is increasingly moving into the digital domain, where most processes are controlled by software systems. Formulations are generated automatically, raw material dosing is carried out with high precision, and quality control is performed in real time. This increases production efficiency and reduces the impact of the human factor.

International cooperation also plays a significant role in the development of the industry. DCC CHIEF is a representative of the well-known Dutch company Van Aarsen, which produces modern equipment for feed mills. This partnership makes it possible to integrate world-class technologies into Ukrainian projects, meeting the highest standards of productivity and precision.

Thanks to equipment from Van Aarsen, feed mills implemented with the participation of DCC CHIEF gain access to advanced solutions in mixing, pelleting, and component dosing. This ensures consistent product quality, high line productivity, and minimal losses. Combined with the company’s engineering approach, this creates fully integrated production systems that meet European standards.
After construction is completed, the commissioning stage begins, which is critically important for achieving the designed capacity. At this stage, the synchronization of all systems is tested, technological processes are adjusted, and equipment performance is optimized. It is here that the stability of future production and its economic efficiency are established.
Personnel training is equally important. A modern feed mill requires highly qualified operators who must understand not only technical aspects but also the logic of production processes. Training is an integral part of the launch phase, as the long-term stability of the enterprise depends on it.

Today, feed mills are increasingly integrated into large agro-industrial clusters that combine grain production, grain storage, processing, and livestock farming. This model makes it possible to create closed production cycles that reduce dependence on external markets and increase business resilience.

In conclusion, the construction of a feed mill today is a complex engineering and economic process that combines strategic planning, technological solutions, and production management. Under current market conditions, the most successful projects are those implemented as integrated systems rather than as a set of separate technological elements.
In this context, DCC CHIEF acts as an integrator that brings together all stages of feed mill development — from concept to commissioning. By combining engineering expertise with international technological partnerships, the company is shaping a new standard for the implementation of agricultural projects in Ukraine, focused on efficiency, stability, and long-term competitiveness.
